Total Laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH)

Hysterectomy or removal of uterus is one of the commonly performed operations

Hysterectomy or removal of uterus is one of the commonly performed operations in Gynaecology. It was most commonly done by abdominal route since ages. But open hysterectomy with big incision and later on ugly scars in the abdomen has its disadvantages of late recovery, more pain, more infection, more loss of official work days  and  hernia and is obviously of no  cosmetic benefit

This has led us to resort more and more to the minimally invasive laparoscopic removal of the uterus. Three ports or small incisions (one of 1cm at the umbilicus and two of 5 mm at the two sides of abdomen ) are made  thus alleviating the need for a bigger cut. The uterus is either taken out through the route of normal delivery or morcellated and taken out through a port if it is big.Laparoscopic hysterectomy ensures complete removal of the uterus and complete cure of the problem.

Advantages:

  • Small cuts
  • Cosmetic quotient is better than open surgery
  • Early discharge from hospital
  • Quick recovery and early return to activity
  • Less postoperative pain
  • Can be done in big uterus with tumour
  • Ovaries (if required) can be removed easily along with the uterus
  • Helps to visualize the entire abdomen along with performance of surgery
